This Week in Congress

Both chambers of Congress were in session this week. The House voted on two bills to repeal energy efficiency programs:

  • Homeowner Energy Freedom Act (H.R. 4758): This bill would rescind funds allocated in the Inflation Reduction Act for states to establish energy efficiency assistance programs.
  • Home Appliance Protection and Affordability Act (H.R. 4626): This bill would impose stricter requirements on any energy efficiency standards for home appliances set by the Department of Energy.

Additionally, the House voted on:

  • H.R. 390: A bill requiring NASA to conduct research on aerial firefighting.
  • H.R. 2600: A bill that would codify NASA’s pilot program to acquire and distribute Earth satellite data from commercial vendors.
  • H.R. 3679: A bill mandating NIST to develop and share AI resources and best practices for small businesses.
  • H.R. 5235: A bill from the Oversight Committee to prohibit minimum educational requirements for government contractors.
  • A bill requiring the Office of Management and Budget to issue guidelines to improve the federal rulemaking process.
  • ROTOR Act (S. 2503): An aviation safety bill passed in the Senate in response to the crash of a passenger plane and a military helicopter near D.C. airport.

Finally, Rep. Khanna (D-CA) forced a vote on a War Powers resolution (H. Con. Res. 38), which would end the use of U.S. forces against the Iranian government or military, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or authorization for military force.

The Senate held votes on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, along with votes to confirm administration nominees.

President Trump appeared before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday to give his State of the Union speech.
