The House’s Dwindling Majority

On March 19th, Rep. Gallagher (R-WI) resigned from Congress following the four-term Republican’s announcement last month that he would not run for reelection. Under Wisconsin state law, the vacancy in Wisconsin’s 8th District will not be filled until the general election in November. The next day, Rep. Buck (R-CO) retired from Congress. These two departures reduced Republicans majority to 217 in the 435 member house. This number could increase dependent on the outcome of the special elections in California, Ohio, and New York; however, Democrats are projected to win this seat.
