This Week in Congress

Congress was in session this week with the Senate tackling nomination votes while the House voted on legislation that would allow immigrants convicted of assaulting cops to be deported (H.R. 2494).  House Judiciary Republicans cited the end of Title 42, the pandemic-era policy that allowed the Trump and Biden Administrations to quickly expel migrants at the southern border, as their rationale to protect law enforcement officers working in immigration law.  Also, the chamber considered legislation that would require the General Services Administration (GSA) to establish a program for federal law enforcement officers to purchase a retired or surplus handgun issued to them. Last week, the House passed the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2), a border security package that includes mandatory E-Verify for employers. However, the bill has no chance of passage in the Senate.
