This Week in Congress
This week, the House voted on the Deporting Fraudsters Act (H.R. 1958), which would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify that aliens who have been convicted of defrauding the U.S. Government or unlawful receipt of public benefits are inadmissible and deportable; and the BOWWOW Act (H.R. 4638), which would amend the same law to provide the same treatment to any alien convicted of harming animals used in law enforcement. The third bill, the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act (H.R. 556), would prohibit the use of lead ammunition or tackle on federal land and water.
Additionally, the House voted on 17 measures with thirteen related to management of federal land, placement and operation of communications facilities on federal land, ocean data collection, and Grand Canyon fire recovery. The list includes two Senate-passed bills: one (S. 3971) would reauthorize the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs (both programs have been unauthorized since October 1, and negotiations to extend them were delayed over concerns with Chinese interference); the other (S. 1884) would limit defenses to claims brought under the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery Act. Another bill (H.R. 1422) would authorize sanctions on foreign entities knowingly engaged in transactions relating to Iran’s oil sector. The final measure is a joint resolution (H.J. Res. 139) proposing a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The Senate voted on Trump administration nominees with the bulk of floor time this week devoted to debate of the SAVE America Act (S. 3752), interrupted by at least one Iran War Powers resolution.
