House Transportation Committee Releases $580 Billion Surface Transportation Bill
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unveiled a five-year, $580 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill, which was debated this week. The legislation would provide state highway departments, public transit agencies, and motor vehicle safety programs with steady annual funding increases above the $80 billion allocated this year under the previous major reauthorization law.
To help fund the plan, the bill includes a first-ever annual registration fee for owners of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, starting at $135 and $35, respectively. Committee leaders from both parties emphasized that drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles share the responsibility for road maintenance, just like those driving gasoline- and diesel-powered cars and trucks.
