This Week in Congress

The House voted this week on the Senate’s version of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act, which ASA supported to eliminate port congestion, along with legislation to address food and fuel prices, diversity practices at financial institutions, and wildlife recovery and conservation efforts.  Additionally, the House select committee investigating January 6, 2021 at the Capitol held three more hearings.  Meanwhile, the Senate worked on finalizing a bipartisan gun safety framework that leaders in both parties said they wanted finalized and quickly moved through the chamber.  The proposal would include grant funding to enact and implement “red flag” laws, additional funding for mental health services and school safety, and provisions aimed at improving records available for background checks of younger gun buyers.  Additionally, the Senate voted on legislation to broaden benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances during their military service.
